Hello, reader. If you’ve been a long-time subscriber, you might recall that I took a little break in October of ‘21 when my comrades and I were shooting a film. Then I took another break in October of ‘22, partially because we were shooting some pickups that month (but mostly because I was lazy).
Now that October has come and gone, you might’ve thought that this streak had come to an end. But you would’ve thought wrong! Because Shudder is still pumping out V/H/S films, I’m still watching them, and my friends at Modern Horrors are still letting me rank them. (And I already had a full slate of material for October. I mean, we had a Friday the 13th!)
Sure, I have less need for a newsletter break now that so many of you have been kind enough to provide monthly guest pieces. But I’m always gonna take a reasonable excuse to share some of my other writing here, especially since I don’t do as much of it as I used to.* And I still believe the V/H/S films embody the spirit of this newsletter well enough to be featured once a year.
So if you’re already missing spooky season, check out my updated ranking of all 31 segments of the V/H/S franchise! I found the latest installment, V/H/S/85, to be the most consistent entry yet; none of the new shorts made the top six, but none of them made the bottom eight either. And I think that’s pretty good.
Shudder hasn’t announced another V/H/S film for next year yet, so this mini-tradition may be coming to an end. Or maybe not! Who’s to say? (Shudder, probably.)
*My only other piece for Modern Horrors this year has been a review of Skinamarink, the most polarizing horror movie of the year.
V/H/S is now streaming on Amazon Prime, Peacock, Tubi, Kanopy, and Hoopla. V/H/S/2 is now streaming on Peacock, Tubi, and Pluto TV. V/H/S: Viral is now streaming on Tubi and Pluto TV. V/H/S/94 and V/H/S/99 are now streaming on Shudder, AMC+, and DirecTV. The first five films are all available to rent elsewhere. V/H/S/85 is now streaming on Shudder and AMC+. (Whew.)
Update: Shudder *did* actually announce a new V/H/S title coming in 2024 (with a sci-fi theme!) a few weeks ago. I wrote this one a month ago and forgot to update it. (Did I mention I needed a break?)
