In Lieu of This Week's Newsletter, I Ranked All of the V/H/S Segments (Again)
Reader, if you’ve subscribed to this newsletter for more than a year, you might recall that I took a little break during our last Spooky Season. Mostly because I was shooting a film of my own, but also because, well, sometimes we content creators need a break.* Because our job is harder than yours, of course.**
During that break last year, I still popped up in your inbox to share a little something with you: a ranking of all of the anthology segments from the V/H/S franchise. These films are most certainly in my wheelhouse because they hearken back to the days of analog yore, and for that reason, anything related to them feels like an acceptable cheat for this newsletter even thought they don’t meet the regular criteria. Plus, I don’t get to share much of my writing for Modern Horrors with you here because, well, we mostly cover new films over on that website, as you might have guessed. (Aside from that time I wrote about a film from 1973 that was released in 2021.) Plus, it’s my newsletter and I do what I want.
So as Halloween winds down, I hope you’ll take a glance at my revised ranking of all 26 anthology segments from all five V/H/S films and then give the brand new V/H/S/99 a spin (and/or last year’s superior V/H/S/94 if you missed it!) over on Shudder. There are some clunkers within each of these films, but I think they’re all more hits than misses, and some of the hits are really good. This might actually be my favorite 21st century horror franchise.***
Happy hauntings, everyone! I’ll be back next week with an actual issue. (Probably.)
*As it turns out, I’ve actually spent three days shooting pickups with our crew this month, one year after principal photography. Gotta make sure those exterior shots match, ya know?
**This isn’t actually my job. Unless someone wants to pay me a salary to write goofy newsletters.
***Apologize for the hot take. I’ll try not to do it again.
V/H/S is streaming on Hulu, Fubo, Pluto TV, and Kanopy. V/H/S/2 and V/H/S: Viral are also streaming on Hulu, Fubo, and Pluto TV. V/H/S/94 and V/H/S/99 are available on Shudder, AMC+, and DirecTV. The first four films are available to rent elsewhere.
