Happy Tuesday, turkeys! I’m hopping into your inboxes twice this week because I’ve got a very special event to promote.
I’m thrilled to announce that Dust On The VCR and KBSVHS are joining forces with the Sidewalk Cinema in Birmingham to bring you the first ever Tapesgiving VHS double feature on Friday, November 15th! (And it’s free! All you have to do is reserve a ticket.)
That’s right. For one night only, my friend KB and I will be digging into our video collections to screen a pair of holiday-adjacent features from the beloved 1990s in all their grainy glory.1 We’ll kick things off with a semi-family-friendly comedy at 7:00 before delving into horror at 9:00 for all the sickos who want to stick around. And we’ll be giving away some prizes throughout the night as well!
But that’s not all, folks. Because not only is KB co-hosting the screenings with me, they’re hosting a pop-up shop in the Sidewalk lobby all night as well! Starting around 6:00, you can browse and buy some excellent selections of tapes and discs and even pick up some other swag from the store. For those unfamiliar, KB opened an honest-to-God video store in Huntsville earlier this year, and they’re keeping the dream alive for tapeheads everywhere. I mean, just look at this place. And don’t let the name fool you; KBSVHS sells DVDs, Blu-rays, video games, books, and plenty of other physical media. It’s a must-see whenever you find yourself in the Rocket City.
By the way, if you’re wondering who designed this wonderfully seasonal promo graphic, that would be my talented friend Courtney LeSueur! You may remember her for her collaborations with Super Yaki, including the recent one for Drop Dead Gorgeous (which she wrote about for this newsletter). You can find more of her work here if you’d like to pay her to design things for you.
Veteran Dusties will know that I’ve done things like this before. Sidewalk has let me host their VHS Time Machine events from time to time. But after several months off, we’re bringing that warm and fuzzy standard definition back to the big screen—and we’re doubling it up! If we pack the house this Friday night, they just might let me host another event in the spring, you know. (Did I mention it’s free?)
Hope to see some of y’all there. And if you live too far away, I hope you’ll consider donating to the Sidewalk Cinema to help them keep the dream alive.2 Happy Tapesgiving!
How “holiday adjacent” are these selections? The comedy is a Thanksgiving film through and through. The horror is…well, you’ll find out, right?
Just last week, I saw Anora, A Different Man, and Paris, Texas at Sidewalk. Not many movie theaters doing it like them, y’all!
Thanks for the shout out, pal 🥰 see ya Friday night!! Can't wait.
