Tremors was released right as the CGI era was just beginning. Thankfully, the creators were more focused on film tropes of the past rather than the future of cinema.
This is one of my all time favorite movies. The creature effects still hold up and the sense of humor always makes me chuckle. Tremors doesn’t get enough love.
The humor is exactly it! They went for fun monsters, not scary monsters, and it works like a cheat code because we never care how goofy they look. Good decision making all around.
It’s so good it’s almost satirical about small town life. But they never make fun of their characters. I’m compiling a list of some of my all time favorite movies and Tremors cracks the top 50 lol this convo is very helpful to think about why I love it
Such a good movie, had it taped off CityTV as a kid and watched it over and over.
Oh man, what a joy it would be to watch this movie on a dubbed VHS tape with all the classic 90s commercials.
My first “scary” movie. On syndication. I think that may be the case for a lot of kids born in the early to mid 80s.
I definitely saw this one very young because my friend's parents thought it was too campy to be scary. And they were right!
Big fan of the Some Kind of Monster crossover in this one!!
Thank you! I can't really explain why, but I think about that scene with Kirk fairly often. 😆

I hope that list winds up in your Substack in the near future!
It will. I’ll start publishing it either 10 by 10 or 25 by 25 at the beginning of 2025.
"Back in those days, all you needed was a big puppet or some convincing stage makeup (and maybe a rising movie star or two) to put butts in seats."
And the studio that made a great deal of those movies? Universal!
An excellent point! Also explains why they made so many more of them. 😆
