We live about 10 minutes away from Seaside. Great writing!

Thank you so much! I need to pay ol' Seaside a visit soon.

A subset of the films you call Floridacore I’ve been tagging on Letterboxd as Tampa Sleaze. I think I prefer your term!

I love "Tampa Sleaze" too though! That's definitely Magic Mike. So many people are out here depriving themselves of that gem just because it has male strippers.

I have a story about being told by some thug that I was in Jim Carrey's eyeliner. I was about three miles away from JC.

Well now you have to say more! Were you working on set or just passing by? What shoot was this?

I’d add Striptease (1996) to the Floridacore canon- it’s based on the novel by Carl Hiassen, the true king of Florida sleaze (I used to devour his mysteries). Never been to Seaside, but Mississippi comedian Mary Ryan Brown skewers it with verve in this skit: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DBrM03XPQPp/

You know, I've never seen Striptease, and I never realized Hiassen wrote the novel! I think he spoke at the Southern Voices conference in Hoover years ago. (My mom goes every year and I tag along when I can.)

Also omg I love MRB and I hadn't seen this. 😂 Tremendous content. Thank you for this gift.

I had no idea The Truman Show was filmed in Florida, but that feels Right™️

I was hoping our resident Florida Correspondent (you) would weigh in! How long has it been since you've seen it?

I think I watched it in middle school, so a million years ago. I remember finding it funny, mostly. I bet I'd feel different if I watched it today. I might need to give it another go with adult eyes and see how my knowledge of the words "agency" and "consent" makes the humor more uneasy.

It is pretty funny at times! They cast Jim Carrey for a reason. But yeah, it has some of the heaviest/thorniest themes I've ever seen in a PG movie.
