Despite a very successful soundtrack, The Jazz Singer was a big-screen fiasco for Neil Diamond. But he found cinematic redemption two decades later in a goofy romcom.
You know, I didn't realize Amy Heckerling directed it until I was doing research to this newsletter, and now I'm really curious to check it out. Her directorial follow-up to Clueless no less!
When the "Jaz Singer" came on during the Bad Movie Marathon, I had a quiet "Oh no" moment. Then the whole audience had the Erine Hudson reaction. I took a picture of the it, but I can't post pictures here for some reason. It was QUICKLY vetoed and replaced with "Highlander", which has its own issues, but blackface isn't one of them.
I can't blame y'all one bit for vetoing that title, but I'm actually really curious to see it now. Might've been kinda fun to loudly boo the blackface scene with a group of people.
I feel like I was built specifically to endure a Bad Movie Marathon.
Dude, you'd love it. It gets real weird in there. 😂 I'll be your sponsor/chaperone if you ever decide to come and do it!
I'll make a note if I'm ever in the area!
Loser is a misunderstood masterpiece.

I prefer Neil '60s Bang recordings to everything else he did- he got more ambitious and less interesting as he went beyond that.
That Bang Years collection is so good. I agree that that's among his best stuff. He was loose and fun back then.
