I lived in Australia for three years in the 90s, and in my hazy, sunny, colorful memories, it looks a lot like Muriel’s Wedding, a film that distilled the provincially surreal, neon-camp essence of Oz at the end of the 20th century.
This is one of my favorite movies. It's a classic example of a movie being much, much better than the cover. My wife and I were in Blockbuster poking around and saw this film sitting on the shelf. It billed itself as a riotous comedy, and while it is funny, it is so much more than that as Nellie notes. It was also the beginning of my love affair with Toni Collette.
Man, I miss those days. There was something so much more compelling about picking up a VHS box than scrolling through Netflix and having the trailer start a second later.
Yay Nellie!!!! I love Muriel’s Wedding ❤️💙💛

Added to my watchlist! Great write-up, Nellie!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed the review and hope you like the film!
(Added it to mine as well!)
More Aussie movies please!
I was hoping you'd enjoy this one!
