This movie was a staple in my house, to the point that my parents bought the life-size cardboard promotional cutout and Santa brought it to us for Christmas. This was a great article and I just wanted to share that.
Totally agree! D'Nofrio is famous (infamous) for his method acting. I'd be curious to understand his process to fully inhabit a giant cockroach running around in a human suit.
In Baker's book he talks about what a joy it was working with D'Onofrio. If I remember right, they were thinking about getting rid of him because of unenthusiastic table reads (I think!), but Baker knew he had a gem because D'Onofrio was game for any kind of makeup application they could come up with. Baker says no one had doubts once D'Onofrio started performing in front of the cameras.
I can add nothing to this singular homage other than my whole-hearted agreement! I regularly rewatch this movie and enjoy it each and every time. There are so many lines that are part of my regular vocab and Vincent in his Edgar Suit is indeed my favorite too!!!
I watched it recently for the first time since I was a teenager! I always remember D'Onofrio's character being weird and fun but I really appreciate it as an actual performance now.
I can live with it if you call me a liar for this, but I do recall that Kinnear got a nomination, and the reason I remember this is because I was pissed off about it at the time. I’ve always disliked him, since seeing him on the heinous Talk Soup cable mugfest, and I found it very irritating when he briefly was treated with respect.

Please tell me you still have that cardboard cutout...

We need an Inside the Actors Studio with Vincent D'Onofrio. 😂

Oh man, that sounds like a great read. I could see D'Onofrio holding back in a table read. So much of his character wouldn't show up on the page.

@Kyle Secor do you think he should have won the Oscar?

Yes. But you're still a liar.
That could really be a sea change of sorts. But I could also see the Academy regressing a bit like they did after Moonlight. We shall see!
