I used to dislike these first two acts of the film, but a revisit made me realize that I was being unfair. I’d been evaluating two thirds of Jason Takes Manhattan for what it isn’t rather than appreciating what it is.
Which is why we were ROBBED of ninety minutes of Jason making his way through David Dinkins' NYC! That nonexistent movie is the GOAT among slasher movies in another universe somewhere.
Would've been fun to watch, but given how little money the production companies were putting behind these films, there's probably no way they could've shown us the whole city. It might've come down to mostly crummy-looking soundstages. (Kinda like the New York scenes in this film!)
I do really have a soft spot for the disgusting film version of New York in 80s/90s films. I think it was the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles that first served me that vision.
My mind checks out after the sixth film. So I'm not too salty about the movies after that, except for the wasted opportunities of Jason X and the daft remake.
Yeah, I've been doing a full franchise rewatch, and I've grown fond(er) of the seventh, eighth, and ninth installments for trying something a little different each time. It's really too bad that Jason X doesn't work though.
Hahaha I love this franchise. I *have* thought in the past that this particular installment might've been better served with a different title, something more nautical...
I will say that, based on what I know, both 'final' chapters were meant to be final at the time. Then, of course, things kept going.
Re: Manhattan, I do believe this is the one where Jason started to teleport around. Like, the cutting on the boat just has him pop up supernaturally in different places.
I think you're right as far as the franchise intentions go. And to be fair, many franchises have done the same thing. But as we all know, if there's money to be made, Hollywood will milk a franchise until it's bone dry.
The description of Manhattan really sells my theory that there was nowhere scarier than 80s NYC on film!

The kills were just so dull. If it wasn't for the frozen face kill and the entertaining holo-camp segment, I'd write the movie off completely.
I've kinda already written it off completely. 😂

But Abigail, that would've been *accurate* advertising, and that's not the Friday the 13th way! 😂
LMAO 😂

No
But have you considered...Yes?
Maybe.
That's the spirit.

"Jason Takes Manhattan" was probably thought to be a better title than the two other options: "Jason Takes The Hudson" or "Jason Takes Jersey City".
Very true. Manhattan has a nice ring to it! I wish Jason would've kept "taking" other cities from there. Alas.
