Is Forrest Gump an American treasure or hackneyed trash? I wasn’t sure if I sat squarely on either side of the criticism fence. So I revisited it for the first time in decades.

I always viewed Forrest Gump as a man who has eventful things happen around him while he remains in a blissful state of innocence. while being the catalyst that makes things happen. Any awareness of the situation he was in would have prevented the event from happening,
I can relate to this, except substitute Mick Dundee for Forrest and Outback Steakhouse/Fosters for Bubba Gump Shrimp. Also as of 5 years ago Iowa also does the paper temporary drivers license.
There are far worse Southern characters in American media than Forrest (vis. the canon of Tennessee Williams) for the area to be represented by, so I'm thankful that I can use him as an example of the fact that moral and ethical people (if somewhat blinded by idealism) also come out of there.

Very true. It's definitely an idealistic view of Southerners, but there are far worse things to be.
