Absolutely hated this movie when it dropped, and I mercilessly dunked on my friend who recommended it. Considered myself a Cronenberg fan. A while later I met Don McKellar and felt compelled to tell him I hated the movie. On subsequent viewing I realized I just hadn't gotten it or been in the right place for it, and it was great, and I'd been a tool.
It's very worth watching. It doesn't have the cast or the budget of The Matrix, but it a solid movie with an interesting story that keeps you guessing. Plus, it has some great scenes set in the '20s that are visually a lot of fun.

I was lukewarm on it myself at first! It went up a bit in my estimation on this recent viewing. I'm glad Don talked some sense into you. 😂
Worth mentioning that The Thirteenth Floor was released a couple months later.
Whoa! I haven't seen this one, but you're right. All three films were released in the spring of that year. Crazy.

A low budget has never deterred me before! Adding it to my watchlist. 🤝
