I'm guessing it's a combo of making it clear that these were Early Humans and also deliberately making them look a lil Off so viewers are more empathetic toward the animal characters. Humans are the villains in Manny's story after all.
You know, weirdly a few days ago I was watching The Guardians with some friends (no idea why) and I thought, dang, Pitch Black looks like that ugly dad from Ice Age
I don’t know if they are ugly on purpose per se but I think it is supposed to play on the difference between sapiens and Cro-Magnon etc and show that they needed the knowledge/help of the animals? I could be wrong
There it is! Thank you! The other word I was looking for this afternoon but couldn’t find. It boils down to making them look less modern/ differently human toward my point
I thought the people in Ice Age were supposed to be either Cro-Magnons or Native Americans, therefore modern humans (in a broad sense), and not Neanderthals, but I could be wrong
I honestly I have no idea. I would have had to extensively google and in the moment didn’t have a chance to. At any rate I think they weren’t drawn to be “ugly” just less evolved
My son loves HTTYD and he calls it Toothless too. I also always cry during the test drive music. The first time that happened (or maybe the fist time he noticed?) , he asked me, "Mommy, why are you crying? They're flying!" And, as you can imagine, that made me cry even harder.
I can relate dude, some kid i went to highschool told me i looked like the rat with the acorn
We prehistoric critters gotta stick together. 😂

Early CGI for the early humans! You right though. People make the most convincing villains.

😂 You ain't kidding.
I’ve never seen an Ice Age despite having an almost 7 year old and an almost 10 year old. They’ve just never been interested.
Also, I got caught in a Moana loop for like a year. Helps that that movie is great. My kids were into Frozen 2 which isn’t as good.
We also got caught in an infinity loop of Totoro, Ponyo, and Kiki’s Delivery Service (which was heaven).
Has Sara’s daughters seen those?
They haven't seen a Miyazaki yet! I'm gonna start them with Ponyo or Totoro soon though.
We're gonna take her oldest to the theater for the first time to see the new live-action How to Train Your Dragon. Can't wait.
Awwwww look at you having a heart and stuff.
Also anything voiced by Ray Romano and I’m in.

That sounds like a pretty logical reading of the character designs! It's really too bad my brain doesn't work that way.
Meh don’t give me too much credit, these thoughts brought to you by copious sugar free Red Bulls
Cro-Magnons were early sapiens who supplanted Neanderthals. Just sayin’

Emotionally, less evolved, in some way that the animals understood, and they didn’t. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ that’s all I got
All I know is they didn't need to look like that. 😂

I would give my life for Toothless. 🥲
